The primary initial cause of the war of 1812, were the economic sanctions placed on the United States by England and France. These sanctions crippled U.S. trade. The U.S., under Jefferson, retaliated with embargoes which eventually hurt the Americans far more than the British. The Americans first attack was Lower Canada.
