The philosophy that was a gentler version of social Darwinism was known as Gospel of Wealth, and it was proposed by Andrew Carnegie. The idea was that wealthy Americans should participate in philanthropy to create things like hospitals and schools to help people help themselves, instead of just simply giving the money to the poor and needy.
