how did the study of fossils help support darwin's ideas about evolution?

Yours answer is,
Fossils contain a "snapshot" of what animals of that age looked like and it went from there. Elder fossils are found lower down in soil so through digging down you can compare the different fossils and see if they are from the same animal at different periods of evolution.
